Why Is My Furnace Leaking Water?

Why Is My Furnace Leaking Water?

If you notice that your furnace is leaking, it may seem a little confusing. After all, it’s not an appliance that uses water, is it?
There are a variety of reasons why your furnace may be leaking water, but if you do see liquid around the indoor unit, then you don’t want to leave the problem unresolved. Water leaks can cause major problems for your home, so act fast to avoid damage to your flooring, walls, and furniture.
Here are a few reasons why your furnace could be leaking and what you should do. New AC Installation

First, Check The Liquid

Just because you have noticed a leak around your heating system, does not necessarily mean that it’s water. Furnaces can leak water or fuel, so the first thing you should do is check to make sure that it’s water.
If it’s fuel, then this could potentially be dangerous, so you would need to evacuate the house immediately and phone up the local fire department, as well as your fuel provider. Fuel leaks need to be deal with by a professional, so don’t just phone up your handyman for the job. It presents a safety concern, so act with caution.

Condensation Leak

Most high-efficiency units that are rated 90% or higher will create condensation in the cool exhaust. This condensation will usually be routed to a floor drain, but if there is a clog or crack in the drainage hose, then this can turn into a leak. The water could also have gathered if the floor drain is backed up.
To check if your unit has a cool exhaust, look for a plastic (PVC) pipe. This type of pipe would indicate that you have a high-efficiency model. If you don’t, and you have metal exhaust pipes instead, then the unit would not have condensation. The leak, in this case, could be down to an incorrectly sized flue pipe. As the pipe cools down, the hot exhaust may be condensing.

Internal Drain System Clog

HVAC systems operate an internal drain system, which may become clogged and direct water into the furnace. This plug could be the cause of your water leak.

Faulty Humidifier

Many heating systems have a humidifier built in to add moisture to the air. This piece helps to keep your home comfortable during the cold winter, but it could be the cause of your water leak.
When you have a humidifier, the water gets piped into the unit and onto an evaporation pan, either of which can leak. You can avoid this issue by getting regular maintenance on your HVAC unit.

Don’t Ignore The Problem

If you notice a leak, then don’t leave the problem to be dealt with another time. Phone up a professional HVAC company and get them to make a specific diagnosis. They will be able to get the problem fixed quickly and efficiently, so you can avoid significant damage to the unit, flooring, and walls. Remember, water damage can lead to harmful mold growth, so keep your family and home safe by acting fast.
